Senator Feinstein Statement on Supreme Court Order
Order paves the way for marriage equality in up to 11 more states
Washington—Senator Dianne Feinstein (D-Calif.) today released the following statement in reaction to the Supreme Court’s decision to not hear several marriage equality cases:
“Monday’s Supreme Court order means as many as 11 more states will soon recognize marriages of same-sex couples. That will bring the total number of states where same-sex couples can legally wed to 30, a clear signal that nationwide equality is coming—a day long overdue.
“Despite Monday’s decision and last year’s Windsor ruling, the battle isn’t over. We still need to fully repeal the discriminatory Defense of Marriage Act and put in place policies to ensure that all federal rights are shared by all married couples. Today, Social Security and VA benefits are still denied to legally-wed couples based on where they have resided at different times. And a section of DOMA unaddressed by the Supreme Court can still shield criminals and others who harm same-sex couples from legal judgments.
“I am committed to fully repealing DOMA and ensuring equality for married same-sex couples under federal law. My bill to accomplish that now has 44 cosponsors and continues to gain support.”
